Here
is my abiding memory of my training at sea. I was serving as an OUT
(Officer Under Training) in HMS TORQUAY (Lieutenant Commander Jim
MacCoy, Royal Navy), of the Second Frigate Squadron.
We were doing 28 knots towards formation anchorage in Caribbean
-tail end Charlie (we were the very junior ship ) - unexpectedly,
the sea boat is suddenly lowered by it falls with crew embarked -
trailing 45 degrees at long stay - they wont survive! -The captain's
response still thrills me with its decisive 'rightness' - 'full
astern port' - 'port 30' - taking the way off the ship in the
fastest possible way and thus saving the sea boats crew for sure! I
remember the withering signal about our lateness from the flag - we
were used to those - great seamanship and ship handling is something
I tried to aspire to and still hold high despite all the hi-tech.
